Souda, a new NYC-based product design company, created a stunning chandelier from post-consumer PET bottles. The bottles were collected by homeless individuals in an effort to raise money for the non-profit SURE WE CAN, which runs the only homeless-friendly can redemption center in the NYC area.

After collection, the bottles were brought to Souda’s studio to be cleaned, cut and riveted together to create a dome-like lighting fixture using upwards of 60 upcycled bottles.

The Cutting (& Stitching) Edge – Melanie Kay

The Cutting (& Stitching) Edge – Melanie Kay:
Melanie Kay is a textile artist from Manchester who creates domestic textiles from beer cans and recycled materials.

Melanie Kay - Lampshades

“I am intrigued by things that I hear and read as well as the things I see. I take inspiration from the media, the theatre or even a film which allows me to take an introspective approach to my work and merge aspects of fine art and design. The desire for my work to be meaningful influences the things that interest and astound me which in turn influences the way in which I work.

Melanie Kay - Smaller Lampshade

“Being experimental with the materials I use has enabled me to be innovative and inventive in the way I portray my imagery. I like to illustrate figuratively to encourage thought and portray sinister events in an aesthetically pleasing way. My aim is to catch the eye of the observer and draw them in before revealing the true happenings concealed within my work.
“Using beer cans as a surface for my work has meant that I have had to be innovative in the way in which I transfer imagery onto the cans. I begin my illustrations mostly in pencil and then use various textile techniques to transfer the imagery onto the cans including, printing, heat pressed textile vinyl, hand and machine embroidery. Not wanting to be limited by textile processes I have experimented with processes such as sanding and punching. “

I met Melanie at the Knitting & Sttiching Show in London and was iintrigued by her work and the accompanying narrative. Melanie’s use of beer cans as the materials for her work relates to domestic violence and the secrets that take place behind closed doors. Drink can be a demon, and one that can hide in plain sight; Melanie’s charming pieces are more sinister than they first appear.

Chocolate Creative: New Products!

Chocolate Creative: New Products!:
Hello everyone! I have a few pretty things to share with you this morning. After I spoke about blogging for business at 100% Design in London recently, I had about an hour to cruise the show to see what was new in the world of design in the UK. That’s when I bumped into my friend Margarita Lorenzo from Chocolate Creative who had the prettiest little booth with all of her products on display.

Chocolate Creative

I’m a fan of Margarita’s products – especially her cushions and totes, but oh boy when my eyes caught site of the new knobs/hooks (below) that she designed (her boyfriend makes the wooden part and she applies the design), I simply knew I had to share them on decor8. Great, right???

Here are a few more things from Chocolate Creative that I’m certain you’ll love today… I must have those knobs though – you can put them on a dresser or cabinet OR use them as hooks on the wall. Brilliant!

But yes, I realllly love those knobs, don’t the totes look so pretty hanging from them in the above photo that I shot with my iPhone? They would really fit a store like Anthropologie or Liberty and well, I’d love to see Margarita’s work in the best stores – she has a great eye. Beautiful job presenting at 100% Design, Margarita, bravo!
