The Cutting (& Stitching) Edge – Anatomically Incorrect Creatures

The Cutting (& Stitching) Edge – Anatomically Incorrect Creatures:

Although reporting on the Plush world is generally the domain of the fantastic Love & A Sandwich, I thought I’d share the work of Anatomically Incorrect Creatures and their Creature Specialist, London-based Bree Yena.
Anatomically Incorrect Creatures - George the Giraffelephant
“Anatomically Incorrect Creatures are handmade faux taxidermy sculptures and plush wall art – specializing in unique and humorous hybrid creature home decor for all! Each creature is completely hand-stitched, designed from original patterns and created out of locally purchased acrylic and Eco Felt – felt that is made 100% from recycled plastic bottles. No animal products, such as wool felt, ever used. Anatomically Incorrect Creatures supports animal lovers, vegetable lovers, meat lovers, allergy sufferers and anyone with a sense of humor.
Anatomically Incorrect Creatures - Rex The Dapper Dinosuar
“I find faux taxidermy to be a unique and humorous mix of environmentally friendly home decor and odd cuteness.  Whether you are an animal rights supporter, craft connoisseur or just have a wicked sense of humor – there really is something for everyone to love with faux taxidermy!
Anatomically Incorrect Creatures - The Foxy Owl
“The creatures are hybrid combinations of at least two animals selected for their uniqueness, oddity and/or cuteness.  For example, Giraff-e-lephants and Foxy Owls!  There is also a truly vegan line of mounted vegetables. Quite a few of the creatures that exist now started out as custom orders and I get a lot of ideas from comments and suggestions through the shop’s Facebook page.
“I will make anything the customer’s heart desires.  The laws of science and nature need not apply – whatever you can come up with, I can try my best to recreate out of felt.”

Ever since I got my first piece of  plush taxidermy from Nicole Licht, I’ve been a fan of this idea. What better way to add grandeur to a room than with your own plush trophy?
Anatomically Incorrect Creatures - The Mustachied Deerabbit
AI Creatures takes gets extra kudos for their use of eco-felt and I just think they’re ace. Well-designed, witty and wonderful, you can commission your own piece by contacting the Creature Specialist directly. The hard part is deciding what to have!

The Cutting (& Stitching) Edge – Holly Levell

The Cutting (& Stitching) Edge – Holly Levell:

Holly Levell is a textile artist from the UK who specialises in soft sculpture.
Holly Levell - soft sculpture

“I am inspired by my daily surroundings and the unnoticed aspects of life and how as an artist I can change the status and meaning of the humble object using my personal textile craft technique. It’s the idea of taking something that is overlooked in life and catapulting it into the spotlight.
Holly Levell - soft sculpture
“My current work comes from exploring ideas for the objects that feature in our day to day lives. I began to focus on shopping and started stitching a flat bean can in my room, it made me think ‘I wonder if I can make this completely from stitched textiles?’ softening the idea and creating a soft, nostalgic object. Supermarket stitch had begun!
Holly Levell - soft sculpture
“Originally I had no idea how to go about making them so it was a bit of trial and error. All of the objects have been taken apart and re-sewn together at least 10 times until I get the ketchup bottle lid to look just right or the ring pull on a coke can to look as though you could actually pull on it.
Holly Levell - soft sculpture
“I never thought about it until I began this work but we all have sentimental memories and a certain fondness for the foods and products that surround us in our lives, a bottle of Heinz Tomato ketchup in the middle of our table at home has become as much a staple piece of furniture as the table and chairs we sit at.”
Holly Levell - soft sculpture

I love a good soft sculpture and Holly’s choice of subject matter brings a smile to my face. Akin to the work of Harriet Hammel, Holly takes ordinary objects and makes us reconsider them by producing them in soft format.

Technically adept and well chosen, Holly’s work is great fun and a terrific example of the form. Find out more about Holly at her website.

For this week’s installment of CMYLK, we’ve done something a little different. Instead of artwork and rooms, we’ve created Colourlovers palettes for four rugs from Spartanburg, South Carolina-based floor covering company Milliken. These abstract designs are works of art in and of themselves.

Eley Kishimoto has a way with patterns. Their designs have touched almost every type of surface from apparel to wallpaper, and even motorcycles and cars. Their most recent application includes an exclusive line of rugs for furniture store, Aram. The pair have recreated a selection of patterns pulled from their fashion textiles of the 1990s in hand-tufted wool. One of our favorite prints – the flash print – makes it into the mix. Add one underfoot here.

Feature Designer: Laura Banchik:

Hello everyone and happy new year!!!! Today’s featured designer is Laura Banchik, a graphic designer from Argentina who has recently entered the world of surface design. Laura starts her design process by drawing and painting by hand and then manipulating the design in Photoshop. I think this method, along with her unique color usage, gives her work the beautiful, organic texture and movement that you see above. Laura recently moved back to Buenos Aires after spending four years in Barcelona and is currently looking for a job, either freelance or permanent.
